What Monolithic Zirconia Is
“Monolithic” means the crown is made from a single block of zirconia, with no ceramic coating. Stronger, with no risk of chipping.
Single Block
Made from a zirconia block milled by CAD/CAM. No ceramic coating means zero risk of chipping.
Multilayer Aesthetics
Modern monolithic zirconia has a colour gradient: lighter at the tip, more yellow at the base, translucent in the middle.
1,000 MPa Strength
Nearly triple that of traditional ceramic. Suitable even for posterior molars under heavy chewing load.
Biocompatibility
100% biocompatible, hypoallergenic, releases no metals. Ideal for those with allergies or sensitive gums.
Crown Comparison: Monolithic Zirconia vs Alternatives
To choose well you need to understand the differences between the available options.
| Item | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Monolithic zirconia | 180 € | Single block, max strength, top aesthetics |
| Zirconia + ceramic coating | 180-220 € | Slightly better aesthetics but risk of ceramic chipping |
| Metal-ceramic | 110 € | Affordable, lasts 8-12 years, risk of visible metal edge |
| Lithium disilicate (E.max) | 250 € | Top aesthetics for front teeth, less strong for molars |
When to Choose Monolithic Zirconia
It is not always the best choice. Here is when we recommend it and when not.
For molars
YES, monolithic zirconia is ideal. Maximum resistance to chewing load, no risk of chipping.
For premolars
YES, recommended choice. Excellent aesthetics/strength balance.
For front teeth
IT DEPENDS. Modern monolithic zirconia is excellent, but for top front-tooth aesthetics E.max veneers remain superior.
For patients with bruxism
YES, the preferred solution. Its 1,000 MPa strength withstands intense grinding. To be combined with a night guard.
FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions
How long do monolithic zirconia crowns last?
15-20 years with proper maintenance (hygiene + annual check-ups). Official Lela Dental guarantee: 5 years on the crown.
Do they break?
Very rarely. Monolithic zirconia has 1,000 MPa strength versus 350 MPa for traditional ceramic. Practically indestructible in normal chewing.
Can they be done in a day?
Almost. With in-clinic CAD/CAM, 2-3 days pass between impression and bonding. For single visits we organise the trip for a 3-4 day stay.
Are they noticeable?
No, modern monolithic zirconia crowns have natural translucency and a colour gradient. Indistinguishable from real teeth even in close-up photos.
