When a Bone Graft Is Needed
Bone resorption after an extraction or years without teeth makes implant placement impossible. The graft restores sufficient bone volume and density.
Post-extraction resorption
When a tooth is extracted and not replaced, the bone resorbs within months. The more time passes, the more material is needed.
Long-term tooth loss
Patients who lost teeth many years ago often have insufficient bone. A graft is almost always necessary.
Post-trauma defects
Fractures, trauma or previous infections can reduce bone. The graft rebuilds the lost volume.
Post-extraction implantology
A graft is often done at the time of extraction to preserve bone volume for future implants.
Bone Graft Costs and Timings
The price depends on the extent of the graft and the material used. It is quantified after a 3D CT assessment.
| Item | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Localised bone graft (1 area) | 350 – 600 € | For 1-2 implants |
| Extended bone graft (sectional) | 600 – 1.200 € | For 3+ adjacent implants |
| Guided bone regeneration (GBR) | 450 – 900 € | With resorbable membrane |
| Autologous bone graft | 800 – 1.500 € | Harvested from the patient, complex cases |
Procedure: What to Expect
The graft is an outpatient procedure under local anaesthesia. Healing takes 4-6 months before the final implant is placed.
3D CT Assessment
Three-dimensional visualisation of the bone defect. Prof. Lela plans the volume and type of graft needed.
Procedure (1-2 hours)
Placement of the regenerative material in the treatment area. Local anaesthesia, sutures, discharge the same day.
Healing (4-6 months)
Period of integration of the new bone with the existing bone. Live normally, with online check-ups.
Implantology
Once sufficient volume is rebuilt, the implant is placed. From then on the path is the standard one.
FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions
Does a bone graft hurt?
No, it is done under local anaesthesia. Post-op requires 3-5 days of standard anti-inflammatories. Mild swelling for 2-3 days.
How long does the graft material last?
It fully integrates with the existing bone in 4-6 months, becoming indistinguishable from natural bone. It is a permanent solution.
Can it be done without a graft?
In some cases yes (short, tilted or mini implants). It depends on the remaining volume. The CT scan tells us whether it can be avoided.
Synthetic or animal-derived materials?
We use CE-certified materials: synthetic granulate (hydroxyapatite) or sterilised bovine-derived material. Similar success rates.
